Moving Checklist: 30-60 Days Prior

Here's a checklist, just for you all you movers & shakers out there!

30-60 Days Before You Move:

  • Budget Your Move! And make a file, folder, bucket or box that's just for moving stuff (you'll have all sorts of things you'll want to keep and organize until the madness has passed!)

  • Determine whether or not you'll be using a moving company. If using a moving company, make sure to obtain written estimates and keep in your moving folder for reference.
    • PRO TIP - Try to work with a mover that is local to where you will be moving, too. Your second option would be to try for a company that is local to where you will be moving from. By local, I mean they have a live person nearby that you can speak with on the phone or in-person if things get hairy.
  • Organize & Pre-Pack! If you haven't already gone through your stuff and donated or tossed anything you don't want to move - now is the time. Be ruthless! You don't want to move anything that really should be going to Goodwill or the dump!
    • Make a list of things that should be packed together, things that aren't to go with movers or things that need to be opened immediately upon arrival.

    • If using movers, make sure you read their guidelines and know what items they will move and what items they won't move or will cost extra, (i.e. movers won't move hazard materials like that extra can of gas for your lawnmower and some household cleaning supplies, they also will charge extra for things like that baby grand in your front room or your kid's motorbike.)
    • Will you need boxes, tape, labels and other moving supplies? You can purchase them at most local moving places like U-Haul or scavenge for them - liquor stores and grocery stores are great places to find boxes, but you'll need to know when they recycle, because the best day to go is the day before recycle day. You'll have all the boxes you'll need and more!
  • Familiarize yourself with your new community!
    • Check out local businesses, entertainment, restaurants and attractions.
    • Scan Facebook for community pages to join
    • Research local doctors, vets and schools if needed.
  • Notify your insurance company of your move. Not only will you need to switch you homeowner's insurance policy, but you should check to see whether your stuff is covered by your policy while you moving!
  • Determine an exact move date.  Talk with your Realtor's about how closing will work and when you should have access to your new home.
    • PRO TIP:  The best laid plans can always go askew and usually at the last minute! Create a back-up plan in case your closing or movers are delayed.

  • Make a list of everyone to notify of your move and gather contact information if it's not handy.  Start your list now and don't forget anyone, such as your mom, dad or kids,  utilities, magazine subscriptions, your gym, banks, etcs.
    • PRO TIP:  Ask doctors/vets if you can have copies of any immunization records. Also, ask doctors if they need a release so your new doctors can have access to your medical records and see you can go ahead an sign those before you leave town.
  • Eat out of your pantry!  Use up as much as you can, so you won't have to move it later.  Especially since moving/shipping companies won't move food.
