Moving Checklist: 10-30 Days Prior

Get Ready, Get Set, Get Packing!  Stick with this checklist and you may come out of your moving experience with your stuff and your sanity intact!

Moving Checklist for 10-30 Days Before You Move:

  • Contact your utility companies and set up dates for canceling service at your old home, transferring service and starting service at your new home.  Pay balances, send notices, whatever they need to get this job done.
    • PRO TIP: have your basic utilities turned on at your new home for the same day you close.  You will want lights, heat and running water on, even if you don't move in for the next couple of days.  There can also be extra charges associated with turn utilities on that had been turned off, so it's cheaper to just transfer as many services as you can from the previous homeowner's name into your own.
  • Send change of address notices and make sure to include the post offices, your bank, magazines or professional publications/newsletters and, of course, mom, dad or the kids. You can visit the US Postal Service online at USPS Online Service to complete the change of address form.
  • You've already done some pre-packing, but now you can go ahead and pack up everything you won't need to survive in the next couple of weeks. Remember to label each box and include instructions regarding when/where it should be opened after moving.
  • Identify items that won't be packed or moved. If possible, gather those items together in one place.
  • Review moving expenses and obtain an itemized list and final estimate from your moving company to review and discuss before moving day arrives.

*Moving days are like weddings. At least one, unplanned thing will happen.  so staying on top of your movers and moving tasks keep those little surprises as minor as possible.
  • Collect all important personal documents and keep them with you during your move. Better yet, scan as many as possible and put in a protected folder on Dropbox (Link to Dropbox), this will be your backup file, in case you lose or damage anything during the transition.
