Moving Day Checklist

It's Moving Day!  Slurp down that extra cup of coffee and let's go!

Checklist for Moving Day!

  • Take your valuables with you. Family photos, art, jewelry - anything that's irreplaceable should go with you, not with the movers. And, don't forget your plants!

  • Supervise the work! It's your home, so have a conversation with the movers when they arrive and let them know what should be loaded first and last and give them any special handling requests. Then, be on-hand while they pack up and load, in case they have any questions or need to make any last minute changes.
  • Keep track of your inventory slip and registration/confirmation numbers. While most people are dependable, it's still a good idea to double-check all notations on your inventory list with the movers. You'll also want to keep you registration/confirmation numbers with you in case there's a delay in the shipping.
  • Conduct final walk-through. Once everything is loaded in the moving truck, conduct a final walk-through of the entire house to make sure nothing was left behind or undone.

  • Final Cleaning: Once everything is out, it's customary to give the house a final surface cleaning before the new residents move in. If you're moving out of a rental property, you'll want to thoroughly clean to ensure you'll receive any deposits back.
  • Have water and/or cups available for your workers if it's hot - they'll appreciate it!
  • Be ready to clean up with an extra trash bags so any trash from moving or meals & snacks can be easily disposed of before you leave.
  • Know where your box cutters are so you can unpack quickly.
Before moving into your new home, PLEASE HAVE YOUR LOCKS CHANGED! Better yet, do this immediately after you get your new keys.  Unless you moving into a rental, where the keys are provided by the landlord, it's up to you to do this basic safety step.
